Need to Replace Your Car Keys?

March 9th, 2012 by Jennifer

Without keys, your car is just a big hunk of metal. Car keys are one of the most important things you carry around with you — and one of the easiest to lose. If you’ve turned your home inside out and still can’t find your keys, you need to get them replaced. With today’s sophisticated keys, you can’t just go down to the hardware store anymore: you’ll have to call either an Orlando auto locksmith or your dealership. Got questions? Read on to learn more about your car key replacement options. These are some of the most common questions our customers ask us.

Why should I call an auto locksmith instead of my dealership?

There are two reasons that we find pretty compelling: lower cost and faster service. Most auto locksmiths offer mobile service, so they can come out to you, unlock your door (if necessary), and program a new key right away. Because you won’t have to pay for a tow or pay the dealership markup, you can save $100 or more on your car keys.

What kind of different keys are there?

You probably don’t need to know what kind of key you have – mention your make, model, and year, and a locksmith can figure it out – but there are transponder chip keys, Vehicle Anti-Theft System, Passive Anti-Theft System, laser cut keys, push button start keys. If your car was made after the mid 1990s, odds are good that a hardware store won’t be able to duplicate your key. (A copy made at the hardware store will be able to open the locks but not start the car.) An auto locksmith can also replace broken or lost remote key fobs to go with your keys.

I lost my main car keys but have a spare. Should I get another set made?

Yes! Having just one set of car keys is tempting fate. Always have at least two sets of car keys in case of lockouts, lock-ins, and holes in your pocket. It’s stressful to be locked out, and choosing a locksmith when you’re in an emergency situation makes you more susceptible to scammers. If you’re down to one key, get some estimates for duplicating it now, before you need it. You’ll be glad you did.

What kind of info or documents do I need in order to get a new car key made?

Dealerships and locksmiths will generally ask for your make, model, and year, plus your vehicle identification number and registration. This is for your safety and prevents unauthorized car key duplication.
